Coachgun, Priest Ranch, Napa Valley, USA, 2013

Put bluntly I don’t care who you are, and you won’t care who anyone else is if you are lucky enough to get a bottle of this. I was only allowed 6 bottles and I will be honest; I am keeping one so there are only 5. This really is bucket list wine and I can’t even tell you what I thought of it because I haven’t opened mine yet, but judging by all the masters of wine around the world who have had it you will shit your pants!!

The historic Priest Ranch is now part of the Somerston Estate, a significant property totaling 1,615 acres, with 222 acres planted to hillside vineyards. Dramatic elevations of the vineyards define and distinguish the estate, ranging from 800 ft to 2,400 ft above sea level. In 2013, the grapes for this wine were chosen from five separate hillside blocks.

Our 2013 Coach Gun was handpicked, sorted, and fermented naturally, then aged for 28 months in 50% new French oak barrels. The blend was refined over the course of the first year of aging and the final blend was determined just months before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Coach Gun is a red blend full of dark berry flavors with a hint of blackcurrant on the nose. Comprised of all five Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this wine is indeed a favorite among red wine lovers. “The big, rich 2013 Coach Gun Proprietary Red is a blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. There’s a whopping 30% Cabernet Franc in it, the biggest part of the wine. This wine is a beauty. Sweet licorice, black and red currants, camphor and a touch of charcoal jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Medium to full-bodied, it exhibits complex elements in both its aromatics and flavor profile. It is full-bodied, rich, layered and ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years.” – 92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate – October 2015, Issue 221

Vineyard Notes

The 2013 vintage was a classic, near perfect growing season with warm days and cool nights. The mild summer and warm weather after verasion caused the fruit to develop with good balance, great flavors, bright acidity and mature, well developed tannins.
