Aguazul, Verdejo Organic, Bodegas Pisuerga, Castilla y León, Spain

£12.00

The grape Verdejo is one of my favourite grapes, but only when it is done right and this is done seriously well. I don’t understand why it is this cheap, as I have had many at this level but they have been at least £10 per bottle more…hmmm…have I fucked up the price?

Producer Profile

Bodegas Pisuerga’s singular aim is to produce exquisite, classically styled Verdejo from organically certified vineyards in and around their winery in La Seca, at the very heart of Rueda.

One of the region’s oldest wineries, they’re committed to the natural and social environment, striving to ensure the soils remain vital to produce the best possible grapes. The use of cover crops and organic manure builds soil diversity and reduces the risk of disease, which in turn leads to a vigilant but hands-off approach amongst the growers. Vinification is in the hands of their experienced team at their state-of-the-art winery in La Seca, where their experience of the region and close partnership between the oenologist and winemaker, enables them to capture the ultimate expression of Organic Rueda Verdejo.

Viticulture

Certified organic farming, the plots have a green cover, and the use of bio-organic fertilisers, cover crop, bio-stimulants and phyto-regulators are used to make the plants stronger against possible diseases. This attention to detail in the vineyard means minimal intervention in the winery. Only oenological products certified for use in organic agriculture are used.

Winemaking

Harvested in the cool of the night to retain freshness, this white wine, organically cultivated undergoes a vegan friendly vinification and fermentation in stainless steel, with bâtonnage for at least 3 months.

Oak Ageing

No oak ageing

Tasting Note

A beautifully balanced and easy drinking Verdejo, with ripe lemon and delicate tropical fruit on both the nose and the palate. Harmonious, refreshing with a herbal twist of fennel on the finish.

Food Matching

Verdejo’s vibrant, refreshing style makes it a great aperitif, but also perfect with Mexican food, such as fish tacos or chicken enchiladas.
